Prior to being elected to the state assembly, he was a school board trustee for the Templeton Unified School District.

Cunningham was born and raised on the Central Coast.

After graduating from Atascadero High School, he attended Point Loma Nazarene University, receiving his bachelor’s in physics with honors. He then served as a Senate Fellow in the California Legislature, working for the Senate Minority Leader on policy and legislation.

Cunningham obtained his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley. While in law school, he volunteered as a high school football and baseball coach. After graduation, he worked in Washington D.C. as an attorney in private practice, a federal law clerk, and an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice.

Desiring to serve the public and return home to raise his children, Cunningham became a Deputy District Attorney in the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office. During his time as a Deputy DA, he prosecuted a wide variety of crimes – including fraud, assault, domestic violence, and environmental crimes. He now represents individuals, families, and local businesses as the owner and founder of Cunningham Law Group.
