Kit Carson County is one of the 64 counties in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,270. The county seat is Burlington. The county was established in 1889 and named for American frontiersman and Indian fighter Kit Carson.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,162 square miles (5,600 km2), of which 2,161 square miles (5,600 km2) is land and 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2) (0.04%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,011 people, 2,990 households, and 2,081 families residing in the county. The population density was 4 people per square mile (1/km²). There were 3,430 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 87.28% White, 1.74% Black or African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 9.20% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 13.67% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,990 households out of which 33.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.40% were married couples living together, 6.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% were non-families. 27.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.07.
