The 2016 presidential campaign of Rodrigo Duterte was announced on November 21, 2015. Rodrigo Duterte, who was serving as Mayor of Davao City, had repeatedly refused to run for several months and turned down other presidential and vice-presidential aspirants' offers to be his running mate, including Jejomar Binay, Miriam Defensor-Santiago and Bongbong Marcos. He was eventually elected President of the Philippines. Duterte's positions particularly the wide-scale of the drug menace in the country in which he promised to eliminate, his record of zero criminal tolerance in Davao City which he ruled for more than 22 years as well his stronger stance against corruption earned support among the voters that heavily relied on older, working class Filipinos who many have been suffering poverty, were heavily nationalistic, and have growing distrust of Western institutions as well the political establishment in Manila that were controlled by the elites and oligarchs in which Duterte accused them not doing much to solve the problem in a move that was described as a populist.
