The 2016 Washington Treasurer election was held on November 8, 2016 to elect the Treasurer of the United States State of Washington. It was preceded by a primary election held on August 2, 2016 which narrowed a field of five candidates to two finalists.
The decision of incumbent Treasurer James McIntire not to seek reelection sparked a competitive race for the office of Treasurer with five candidates registering to compete in the contest: Democrat John Paul Comerford, Republican Duane Davidson (Treasurer of Benton County, Washington), Democrat Alec Fisken (former commissioner of the Port of Seattle), Democrat Marko Liias (a member of the Washington State Senate), and Republican Michael Waite (an investment banker).
Under Washington's top-two primary system, the two candidates receiving the greatest number of votes, regardless of party, would advance to the general election. The primary was won by Republicans Duane Davidson and Michael Waite, marking the first time since the top-two system had been instituted that both of the primary slots in any statewide race had been won by Republicans.
In the general election, Duane Davidson received the endorsements of every county treasurer in Washington state, both Democrat and Republican, as well as Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman. Michael Waite was endorsed by former state Auditor Brian Sonntag and former state Attorney-General Rob McKenna.
