Little Caesars

imageLittle Caesar Enterprises Inc.

Little Caesar Enterprises Inc. (doing business as Little Caesars) is the third-largest pizza chain in the United States, behind Pizza Hut and Domino's Pizza. The Little Caesars headquarters is located in the Fox Theatre building in Downtown Detroit, Michigan. It operates franchises internationally in Asia, the Middle East, Australia, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Little Caesars Pizza was founded on May 8, 1959, by Detroit Tigers farm team shortstop Mike Ilitch (1929–2017) and his wife (since 1955) Marian Ilitch (1933– ). The first location was in a strip mall in Garden City, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Mike wanted to call it simply "Pizza Treat," but Marian wanted a name that would be more suitable. Marian considered Mike her "little Caesar". Mike ultimately relented, and the store opened as "Little Caesar's Pizza Treat." The original store is still open today.

The company is famous for its advertising catchphrase, "Pizza! Pizza!" which was introduced in 1979. The phrase refers to two pizzas being offered for the comparable price of a single pizza from competitors. Originally, the pizzas were served in a single long package (a piece of corrugated cardboard in 2-by-1 proportions, with two square pizzas placed side by side, then slid into a form-fitting paper sleeve that was folded and stapled closed). In addition to pizza, they served hot dogs, chicken, shrimp, and fish. Little Caesars has discarded the unwieldy packaging in favor of typical pizza boxes.

In 1998, Little Caesars filled what was then the largest pizza order, filling an order of 13,386 pizzas from the VF Corporation of Greensboro, North Carolina.

Starting in 2004, the chain began offering "Hot-N-Ready", a large pepperoni pizza sold for $5. The concept was successful enough to become a permanent fixture of the chain, and Little Caesars' business model has shifted to focus more on carryout.

Pizza Corner (Halifax)

Coordinates: 44°38′42″N 63°34′28″W / 44.644975°N 63.574419°W / 44.644975; -63.574419

Pizza Corner is an intersection in Halifax, Nova Scotia, at the junction of Blowers Street and Grafton Street. It is a local landmark originally consisting of three pizzerias: King of Donair, Sicilian Pizza and the European Food Shop. Completing the four corners is the Presbyterian Church of Saint David, a provincially recognized heritage building. All three pizzerias are known for their Halifax-style donairs, and the corner is a popular destination for hungry patrons of the local bars and pubs.

In 1995, when the G7 Summit was held in Halifax several world leaders made a point of visiting the location and buying donairs.

Recently King of Donair has moved to another location, leaving the iconic corner with only two pizzerias. The former KOD location has been replaced by a frozen yogourt chain. The European Food Shop closed in 2015 after operating since 1987. The building's owner said the space "will still be a food shop but likely not a pizza shop".

Pizza Pizza

imagePizza Pizza Ltd.

Pizza Pizza Ltd. is a franchised Canadian pizza fast-food restaurant, with its headquarters in Etobicoke, Toronto. Its restaurants are mainly in the province of Ontario. Other locations operate in Quebec, Nova Scotia, and in western Canada. Franchises in western Canada are mostly run through Alberta-based subsidiary Pizza 73, and in non-traditional locations such as university campuses and movie theatres throughout Canada. It has over 500 locations, including over 150 non-traditional locations.

The chain was founded by Michael Overs, who opened the first location on December 31, 1967, at the corner of Wellesley and Parliament Streets in Toronto. He owned the chain until his death in 2010. It expanded throughout the Toronto area in the 1970s, and throughout the rest of Ontario throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

The chain opened its first locations in Quebec in the mid-1980s, but withdrew after a few years. It returned to the province, in Gatineau, in March 2007. Locations were opened in the Montreal area in late 2007 in the boroughs of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Pierrefonds-Roxboro.

In 2012, Pizza Pizza accounted for 21% of the market in Quebec by revenue, while competitors Domino's and Pizza Hut held 30% and 23% respectively. Double Pizza, which held 26% of the market in 2006 before Pizza Pizza entered the market, had been reduced to 15%.

Pizza Pizza began to expand significantly outside Ontario during the 2000s. In its 2005 initial public offering filings, the chain announced it would consider expansion in western Canada, potentially including purchasing existing local chains. This led to a June 2007 agreement to purchase Alberta-based Pizza 73. As well, in October 2006, the company announced it would expand in the Quebec market, beginning with sponsorship of the Montreal Canadiens. The chain expanded to the British Columbia Lower Mainland in 2009, however all locations closed (Pizza 73 already had a location in Prince George in the B.C. Interior), and soon after added locations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Pizza Pizza opened its first store in Halifax, Nova Scotia in June 2010.
