Lafleur Restaurants

imageLafleur Restaurants

Lafleur Restaurants (in French, Resto Lafleur) is a chain of family-owned fast food restaurants located in the greater Montreal area.

The business began in 1951 on Avenue Lafleur in LaSalle, Quebec (in the Montreal area). It was set up by Denis Vinet who had spent the previous ten years selling hot dogs and french fries from a van in LaSalle. The business gradually grew into a chain that is spread in and around Montreal.

Lafleur is widely known for serving the basic staples of Québécois fast food, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries and poutine. It is particularly known for its hot dog dishes. Among the hot dog varieties available is the Michigan hot dog that might be served with processed cheese and/or onions, the tofu dog, the Supreme (with processed cheese and bacon), and the traditional steamed Montreal hot dog which contains onions, sweet relish, mustard, and coleslaw, known as an "all-dress steamé".

As of 2008, Lafleur has added a vegetarian burger to its menu.

Lafleur's french fries ("frites") are fresh cut russet potatoes. They are cut from non-mechanized hand-operated potato presses which are often installed to be visible by customers.

The chain also serves breakfast which includes simple meals such as toast and coffee or more elaborate ones that include crêpes, French toast, hash browns, sausages, bacon, eggs, and baked beans.

St. Martin's Episcopal School

Michael Kirk Talbot (born November 18, 1969) is a Republican member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from River Ridge, Louisiana, located in Jefferson Parish in suburban New Orleans.

Talbot attended Saint Martin's Episcopal School in his native Metairie in Jefferson Parish and holds an undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Mississippi at Oxford.

First elected in the 2007 general election against Harahan Councilwoman Tiffany Scot Wilken to replace the term-limited District 78 Representative Shirley D. Bowler, a Republican who had served since 1992.

Talbot is a proponent of reduced spending by Louisiana government, specifically naming higher education as an area ripe for cutting. In a June 15, 2009, letter to the editor of the Times-Picayune (New Orleans), Talbot explicitly opposed 2009 Louisiana Senate Bill 335 by Senator Lydia P. Jackson of Shreveport and criticized the increased rate of state spending for higher education over the last 10 years; Jackson’s bill was an attempt to delay a state income-tax reduction as a means of forestalling a 15.4-percent budget cut to Louisiana's public universities. The income-tax reduction was in a 2008 statute intended to accelerate reversal of the Stelly Plan, named for its author, former Republican State Representative Vic Stelly of Lake Charles. Talbot supported the reversal in his 2007 campaign in which he also endorsed private school vouchers. Talbot's letter was symptomatic of a larger struggle over the budget in the Louisiana Legislature. On the next day (June 16, 2009) and without naming Talbot, a letter from Louisiana State Senate president Joel Chaisson appeared in the Times-Picayune. Chaisson asserted there was "a misguided attempt by the House to protect their member projects"; the representatives were "allowing their member projects to go forward even if higher education is not properly funded" according to Chaisson.

Marathon Enterprises, Inc.

Marathon Enterprises, Inc. is a major regional supplier of meats and gourmet delicatessen products to the food service industry in the New York City metropolitan area. Headquartered in Englewood, New Jersey, it is a private corporation, and sells its products under the Sabrett brand name.

Gregory Papalexis, of Greek descent, was the owner and president of the company. After he graduated from New York University in 1948, Papalexis and a partner established a new provisions company. When it was discovered the name "Sabre Meat Company" had already been taken in New York City, the pair agreed on Sabre-ette, which was later shortened to Sabrett. Though Papalexis initially started to sell hot dog buns, he eventually decided to produce the hot dogs and sell them from House O' Weenies stainless steel push carts with the now familiar blue and yellow umbrellas.

The company's flagship product is the Sabrett brand frankfurter. They and other meats such as pastrami and salami are processed at the Marathon factory in the Bronx, New York. The frankfurters are sold through Sabrett branded carts on the streets of New York City and elsewhere in the metropolitan area, local supermarkets, and club locations such as BJ's, Costco, and Jetro.

Other products sold under the Sabrett brand name include condiments popular on hot dogs such as sauerkraut, sweet relish, spicy brown mustard, and a red onion sauce known as "Sabrett's Prepared Onions."

National Coney Island

imageNational Coney Island

National Coney Island is a Coney Island-style restaurant based in Michigan that specializes in Greek-American cuisine. It is a corporation that has more than 20 National Coney Island locations in the Metro Detroit area.

The first establishment opened in the Macomb Mall in Roseville, Michigan. James Giftos, a Greek immigrant, was the founder of National Coney Island in 1965. At that point, the menu was very limited, only including Coney Island hot dogs, Coney Island style loose hamburgers, a few sandwiches, potato chips, and soda pop. The item selection was hand-painted on wooden menu boards, advertising a 35 cent hot dog. In the late sixties, shoppers traveled from a great distance to patron regional malls, therefore National Coney started implementing new locations in those areas. Giftos was able to open two new stores in St. Clair Shores (1969) and Detroit (1971), due to the success of the Macomb location. Years later, Giftos thought to expand his menu (which was the same for all three locations). He wanted to make his restaurants more family oriented, as well as updating the decor to set his chain apart from other Coney Island style restaurants in the area. In following this new change, the expansion of this Coney Island chain did not explode until the mid-1980s to early 1990s. This is when the chain really grew to eleven locations, each with unique interior, some implementing drive-thrus, and others offering beer and wine.

National Coney Island hosts Coney Island hot dogs. Other items on the menu include French fries, loose burgers, and a various list of burgers and sandwiches. Some Greek items on the menu are gyros, rice pudding, and saganaki. The most famous sandwich of National Coney Island is the “hani”: a chicken-finger pita, which National Coney Island offers in different variants with different kinds of sauces and cheese. A regular hani special contains American and Swiss cheese, while a southwest hani uses pepperjack cheese and chipotle sauce.Another popular item on the National Coney Island menu is the Mr. Pop Burger. This burger is named by the company mascot, Mr. Pop. The burger is made up of sourdough bread, a 1/3 lb. patty, lettuce, tomato, red onion, 1000 island dressing, and pickles on the side. National Coney Island produces its own chili. The chili is available cooked and ready for the customers or frozen and sold separate. The chili is often sold within a Coney Kit as well. This kit contains a brick of chili, two dozen frozen hot dogs, two dozen buns, a bowl of onions, and a bottle of mustard.

Montreal Pool Room

The Montreal Pool Room is a well-known and well-regarded greasy spoon (French: casse-croûte) restaurant, located in the city's former red-light district on Saint Laurent Boulevard, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The restaurant has been open since 1912 (registered 1921) and is known for its "underground allure", described by some as being a "seedy goodness”. Though called a "pool room" by name, it no longer has a pool table.

The restaurants primary offerings are:

Opened in 1912, it is reputed to serve some of the best steamed hot dogs and "patates frites" in the city. Despite its name, it is no longer a functioning pool room, with the restaurant's pool tables long gone:

The only remaining evidence of its former billard hall status, aside from the name, are two boarded up tables now used for counterspace in the otherwise table-free eatery.

The Montreal Pool Room was burned down by a fire in 1989, which according to some destroyed its original interior and had to be rebuilt.

The establishment was one of several businesses on the strip resisting attempts to redevelop and gentrify the area, which is located within the new Quartier des Spectacles.

In March 2010, the restaurant announced that it was moving nearby to make room for new developments in the district. Since then, it has moved across the street.
