Ginsters

imageGinsters

Ginsters /ˈɡɪnstərz/ is a company based in Callington in Cornwall, in the south-west of England. The biggest selling pasty maker in the UK, it specialises in making mass-produced pasties, sausage rolls, sandwiches, pasta bowls and other savoury snacks.

The Ginsters family were farmers in the small Cornish town of Callington. In 1967 they started buying in fresh pies and pasties to sell by van sales to various local retail outlets. After a while, founder and head of the company, Geoffrey Ginster saw the limitations of this trade and decided that the family itself should start manufacturing pasties. They started the business in a near-derelict egg-packing station, with a staff of four. Geoffrey Ginster started production of pasties from a 'secret recipe' he claimed to have obtained from a ship's cook. Production slowly increased until by 1970 a staff of 30 was producing 48,000 units a day. Initially Ginsters pasties were sold to pubs, cafés, corner shops and other small stores in Plymouth and nearby seaside towns, before expanding further to cover southern England.

In 1977, Geoffrey Ginster retired and sold the business to Samworth Brothers, leading to further growth, modernisation and development. An adjoining factory was acquired, renovated, and equipped with modern baking and packing facilities. It was renamed the Tamar Bakery and later extended with new, largely automated, machinery installed. When it went into operation the original Ginsters bakery was closed. In 1984, Ginsters was producing 1.5 million pasties a week and had become the biggest employer in East Cornwall’s private sector. In 1987 a new bakery, named Lynher bakery after the nearby River Lynher, was built alongside the Tamar Bakery.

It specialises in savoury products such as pasties, sausage rolls and sandwiches and sweet items including doughnuts and vanilla slices. It is headquartered in Newcastle upon Tyne. It is listed on the , and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index.

The first Greggs was opened in 1951. Growing regionally from its North East base, Greggs began to acquire other regional bakery chains across the rest of the country from the 1970s onwards. By the 1990s, it was the largest bakery chain in the country after acquiring its major rival, Bakers Oven, in 1994. In 2017 the chain had 1,764 outlets, including 143 franchised outlets. The company opened 145 new shops in 2016 and closed 79 shops, as well as completing 208 store refits.

Greggs was founded by John Gregg as a Tyneside bakery in 1939. It opened its first shop in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1951. When John died in 1964, the bakery was taken over by his son, Ian, assisted by his brother, Colin. Major expansion began soon after, including the acquisitions of other bakeries such as Glasgow-based Rutherglen in 1972, Leeds-based Thurston's in 1974, Broomfields the Bakers, London, Bowketts the Bakers in Kent, Tooks the Bakers (East Anglia) and Price's (Manchester) in 1976.

In May 1994, the company acquired the Bakers Oven chain of bakers' shops from Allied Bakeries. In August 1999, Greggs rebranded its 100 Braggs bakers shops as Greggs of the Midlands, and its Leeds based Thurston chain as Greggs of Yorkshire. In December 2008, Greggs announced that all of its 165 Bakers Oven branded shops would be re-branded as Greggs shops so that all of the Bakers Oven shops could benefit from the Greggs national advertising campaign. In 2011, the company opened its 1,500th shop in York. In 2012, the company began selling frozen pasties through supermarket chain Iceland. In January 2013, Greggs replaced its CEO Ken McMeikan with Punch Taverns CEO Roger Whiteside. McMeikan left the firm for Brake Bros.

Grodzinski Bakery

Grodzinski Bakery is a chain of kosher bakeries in London, England, where it is popularly known as "Grodz", and in Toronto.

In 1888, (although this date is still used in all publicity material and for Centenary celebrations, research at Public Records Office in Kew has indicated that they arrived in 1890) Harris and Judith Grodzinski, bakers by trade, joined many members of the Jewish community in the Russian Empire in migrating westward from Voranava - once a shtetl near Lida, currently Belarus, establishing themselves in the East End of London. There they hired kosher ovens and set out baking bilkelekh, thereby beginning a business that would grow from a trading barrow to a full-scale bakery at 31 Fieldgate Street, over which they lived.

Harris and Judith were followed in the mid-1890s by Harris nephew, Chaim Elyah Grodzinski (later changed his name to Hyam Hyams and went into the cinema business with his sons Phil & Sid) who had married Judith's sister Jessie.

Hyam Grodzinski was a businessman par excellence. His bakery at 20 Bedford Street (renamed after World War I to Cavell Street) thrived whereas Harris and Judith were not doing so well. The two families swapped premises (including accommodation above) for a number of years until Fieldgate Street was made into a successful business.

The bakery passed through two generations, managed successively by Harry and Judith's son Abraham (Abie) Grodzinski, who inherited the bakery at 18 on his father's untimely death at age 54; by Abie's widow, Bertha Jeidel, who had immigrated from Pfungstadt, Germany, and took over the business when Abie succumbed to the Spanish Flu Pandemic; and by their eldest children, Harry and Ruby Grodzinski, who took up the reins in 1930.

Grods prospered under Harry's and Ruby's tenure, beginning with the opening of a second location at 91 Dunsmure Road, Stamford Hill, to which baking was moved. A decade later, the bakery had expanded to six locations, and even the original 31 Fieldgate Street location's demise in a 29 December 1940 German air raid could not halt expansion. By the mid-1960s Grodzinski was the largest kosher bakery in Europe, preparing both fine pastries and a range of breads, and adding to their retail business a thriving wholesale operation distributed through such British institutions as Selfridges, Marks & Spencer and Harrods.

Hovis

imageHovis Ltd

Hovis Ltd is a British company that produces flour and bread. The brand originated in Macclesfield, Cheshire, in 1886, and became part of Rank Hovis McDougall (RHM) in 1962 after a succession of mergers. RHM, with its brands including Hovis and Mother's Pride, was acquired by Premier Foods in 2007.

Hovis became a limited company in April 2014, after Premier Foods sold a 51% stake in the business to The Gores Group to form a joint venture between the two companies.

Hovis specialises in high wheatgerm wholemeal flour, the bread being baked independently. It also produces the Nimble brand reduced-calorie bread.

The brand began in 1886; the Hovis process was patented on 6 October 1887 by Richard "Stoney" Smith (1836–1900), and S. Fitton & Sons Ltd developed the brand, milling the flour and selling it along with Hovis branded baking tins to other bakers. The name was coined in 1890 by London student Herbert Grime in a national competition set by S. Fitton & Sons Ltd to find a trading name for their patent flour which was rich in wheat germ. Grime won £25 when he coined the word from the Latin phrase hominis vis – "the strength of man". The company became the Hovis Bread Flour Company Limited in 1898.

When the abundance of certain B vitamins in wheatgerm was reported in 1924, Hovis increased in popularity.

In 1915, when the London and South Western Railway inaugurated their first electric train services, they introduced alphabetical head-codes in lieu of the traditional discs used on steam locomotives so that the general public could more easily identify their train. A 1926 advertisement widely deployed on the railways showed five such trains carrying headcodes H ō V I S along with an explanation (H-Hampton Court, ō-Hounslow, V-Kingston (Thames Valley), I-Dorking North & Effingham and S-Shepperton). The fact that the "clockwise" Hounslow Loop head-code was a slightly height-reduced 'O' topped by a bar explains the unique rendering of the brand as HōVIS - a rendering that significantly outlasted the advertising campaign.
