Tayto (Republic of Ireland)

imageTayto Crisps

Tayto Crisps is an Irish crisps and popcorn manufacturer, founded by Joe Murphy in 1954. Tayto invented the first flavoured crisp production process. Tayto crisps are a cultural phenomenon in Ireland, and "Tayto" is used by many people in Ireland, particularly in rural areas, as a metonym for crisps. In November 2010, Tayto opened their own theme park called "Tayto Park" near Ashbourne, County Meath.

The company Tayto is currently owned by Largo Foods. It was previously owned by Cantrell and Cochrane, and was based in Coolock, County Dublin, until their factory was closed in September 2005, when production was outsourced to Largo. Largo agreed to purchase the brand from C&C in May 2006 for €62.3 million.

Tayto crisps come in several flavours: Cheese & Onion, Salt & Vinegar, Smokey Bacon, Prawn Cocktail, and the limited edition flavour Tex Mex.

In the early 2000s, the company targeted the healthy eating market, with its low salt, low fat crisps, originally branded as Honest. Tayto currently refers to this range as the Happy & Healthy range.

Tayto also produce a number of other ranges of products:

Nuts and Popcorn Range

Snacks Range

Happy and Healthy Range

Sharing Range

Tayto have used their mascot, Mr. Tayto, in a number of marketing campaigns. In the 2007 Irish General Election, Tayto ran an advertising campaign with Mr. Tayto as a fake election candidate. Tayto have claimed that the number of spoiled votes in the Carlow–Kilkenny constituency indicate that some actually voted for their mascot, but this is purely speculative. Tayto were fined during the campaign for littering, due to their fake election posters being posted in public places.

In 2009, Tayto Ltd. published The Man Inside the Jacket, a fictional autobiography of Mr Tayto written by Maia Dunphy, Ciaran Morrison and Mick O'Hara. Tayto indicated that a percentage of the cover price would go to Irish charity Aware.

Toaster Strudel

imageToaster Strudel

Toaster Strudel is a toaster pastry brand which was originally notable for being stored frozen, due to innovations in 1980s food manufacturing processes. The pastries are a convenience food, prepared simply and quickly by heating them in a toaster and then spreading the included icing packet on top.

Toaster Strudel is marketed under the Pillsbury brand, formerly of the Pillsbury Company. The product has found considerable success since being deployed in 1985 as competition with Kellogg's Pop-Tarts brand of non-frozen toaster pastries. In 1994, the company launched the advertising slogan "Something better just popped up". As of August 2013, the company increased the foreign branding, launching a brand ambassador character named Hans Strudel, and the new slogan of "Get Zem Göing".

Since the brand's introduction, various flavors of Toaster Strudel have come and gone, and a current list is on the manufacturer's website. Flavors have included:

A similar Pillsbury product, Toaster Scrambles, is a savory toaster pastry with meat and cheese breakfast ingredients. In 2013 two varieties were available:

In the 2004 teen movie Mean Girls, it was fictitiously claimed that Gretchen Wieners's family fortune was due to her father's of the Toaster Strudel.

Tostitos

imageTostitos

Tostitos is a brand of tortilla chips and (more recently) dips produced by Frito-Lay.

In January 1978, Frito-Lay's product development group led by Jack Liczkowski had completed development of Tostitos. The chips were round, made of white corn and had a more authentic "Mexican" flavor. Part of achieving this authenticity occurred after research discovered that Mexicans, after cooking corn with lime, did not rinse the corn completely; therefore, the resulting stone ground corn masa has higher content of lime and lower pH. When frying the formed chips, calcium hydroxide reacts with oil and gives this specific taste. After successful test marketing in 1979, Tostitos Traditional Flavor and Tostitos Nacho Cheese Flavor went into national distribution in 1980 in the United States and have reached the sales of $140 million, making it one of the most successful new product introductions in Frito-Lay history. The chips are often eaten with salsa or nacho cheese dip, which the company also produces.

There are several varieties of Tostitos chips:

Some Frito-Lay brand seasoned products, including some flavors of Tostitos, contain pork enzymes in addition to herbs, cheese and other seasonings. Frito-Lay's web site states that they use enzymes from pigs (porcine enzymes) in some of their seasoned snack products to develop 'unique flavors'. The presence of pig-derived ingredients makes them unsuitable for vegetarians, vegans, as well as non-kosher (sinful for observant Jews to eat), and haraam (sinful for observant Muslims to eat).

Since 1995, Tostitos has been the title sponsor of the Fiesta Bowl, one of the four bowl games that make up the Bowl Championship Series, the unofficial national championship of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A). The game was played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona through 2006 before moving to University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona in 2007.

Twiglets

Twiglets are a wheat-based snack with a "distinctive knobbly shape" similar to that of a small twig. The taste of Twiglets derives from the yeast extract used in its coating, and has been compared to that of Marmite. They are marketed in the United Kingdom and packaged in 24 g, 45 g, 105 g and 150 g bags and in 200 g tubs.

Twiglets were originally launched in 1932 by Peek Freans after being invented by the company's French technical manager, Rondalin Zwadoodie. Today, Twiglets are manufactured in Aintree by United Biscuits subsidiary Jacob's. In the early 1990s, a range of tangy Worcester Sauce Twiglets was introduced. These were not as popular as the original flavour and had been withdrawn by the end of the decade.

Twinkie

imageTwinkies

A Twinkie is an American snack cake, marketed as a "Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling." It was formerly made and distributed by Hostess Brands. The brand is currently owned by Hostess Brands, Inc. (NASDAQ: TWNK), having been formerly owned by private equity firms Apollo Global Management and C. Dean Metropoulos and Company as the second incarnation of Hostess Brands. During bankruptcy proceedings, Twinkie production was suspended on November 21, 2012, and resumed after an absence of several months from American store shelves, becoming available again nationwide on July 15, 2013.

Twinkies are produced in Canada by Saputo Incorporated's Vachon Inc. (at a bakery in Montreal) which owns the Canadian rights to the product and were still available during the absence in the U.S. market. Twinkies are also available in Mexican stores as "Submarinos" and "Twinkies" made by Marinela, and as "Tuinky" made by Wonder; both Marinela and Wonder are subsidiaries of Mexican bread company Grupo Bimbo. In Egypt, Twinkies are produced under the company Edita. Twinkies are also available in the United Kingdom and Ireland under the Hostess brand name where they're sold in Sainsburys, Tesco, ASDA and B&M stores. Twinkies are produced and distributed by multiple commercial bakeries in China, where Hostess does not own the brand.

Twinkies were invented in Schiller Park, Illinois on April 6, 1930, by James Alexander Dewar, a baker for the Continental Baking Company. Realizing that several machines used to make cream-filled strawberry shortcake sat idle when strawberries were out of season, Dewar conceived a snack cake filled with banana cream, which he dubbed the Twinkie. Ritchy Koph said he came up with the name when he saw a billboard in St. Louis for "Twinkle Toe Shoes". During World War II, bananas were rationed and the company was forced to switch to vanilla cream. This change proved popular, and banana-cream Twinkies were not widely re-introduced. The original flavor was occasionally found in limited-time promotions, but the company used vanilla cream for most Twinkies. In 1988, Fruit and Cream Twinkies were introduced with a strawberry filling swirled into the cream. The product was soon dropped. Vanilla's dominance over banana flavoring would be challenged in 2005, following a month-long promotion of the movie King Kong. Hostess saw its Twinkie sales rise 20 percent during the promotion, and in 2007 restored the banana-cream Twinkie to its snack lineup.
