Cheesesteak

A cheesesteak, also known as a Philadelphia cheesesteak, Philly cheesesteak, cheesesteak sandwich, cheese steak, or steak and cheese, is a sandwich made from thinly sliced pieces of beefsteak and melted cheese in a long hoagie roll. A popular regional fast food, it has its roots in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania, United States.

The cheesesteak was developed in the early 20th century "by combining beef, onions, and cheese in a small loaf of bread", according to a 1987 exhibition catalog published by the Library Company of Philadelphia and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Philadelphians Pat and Harry Olivieri are often credited with inventing the sandwich by serving chopped steak on an Italian roll in the early 1930s. The exact story behind its creation is debated, but in some accounts, Pat and Harry Olivieri originally owned a hot dog stand, and on one occasion, decided to make a new sandwich using chopped beef and grilled onions. While Pat was eating the sandwich, a cab driver stopped by and was interested in it, so he requested one for himself. After eating it, the cab driver suggested that Olivieri quit making hot dogs and instead focus on the new sandwich. They began selling this variation of steak sandwiches at their hot dog stand near South Philadelphia's Italian Market. They became so popular that Pat opened up his own restaurant which still operates today as Pat's King of Steaks. The sandwich was originally prepared without cheese; Olivieri said provolone cheese was first added by Joe "Cocky Joe" Lorenza, a manager at the Ridge Avenue location.

Cheesesteaks have become popular at restaurants and food carts throughout the city with many locations being independently owned, family-run businesses. Variations of cheesesteaks are now common in several fast food chains. Versions of the sandwich can also be found at high-end restaurants. Many establishments outside of Philadelphia refer to the sandwich as a "Philly cheesesteak."

Chicken and chips


Chicken and chips is a combination of foods predominantly consumed in the United Kingdom, The Commonwealth, and United States. It consists of a piece of fried, roasted, or barbecued chicken and French fries, or chips as they are known in the UK. The consumption of chicken and chips is a popular food choice based on its value for money. In some cities, such as London, on most high streets there are at least one or two chicken and chip shops, amongst kebab, pizza, Chinese, and Indian take-away shops.

A serving of chicken and chips is usually packaged in a small cardboard box lined with a piece of greaseproof paper. A sachet of salt, and sometimes pepper, is sometimes served with the food.

In 2012, chicken and chips was added to the UK consumer basket, used for calculating inflation.

Chicken fingers, also known as chicken tenders, chicken goujons, chicken strips or chicken fillets, are chicken meat prepared from the pectoralis minor muscles of the animal. These strips of white meat are located on either side of the breastbone, under the breast meat (pectoralis major). They may also be made with similarly shaped pieces cut from chicken meat, usually the breast.

Chicken fingers are prepared by coating chicken meat in a breading mixture and then deep frying them, in a manner similar to the preparation of Schnitzel. Chicken fingers are a common snack in the U.S..

A chicken nugget is a chicken product made from chicken meat which is breaded or battered, then deep-fried or baked. Fast food restaurants typically fry their nuggets in vegetable oil.

Some fast food restaurants have launched vegetarian alternatives. McDonald's served Garden McNuggets made of beans and Swedish fast food restaurant Max Hamburgare offers a dish containing nuggets made of falafel. Quorn also supplies vegetarian chicken style nuggets.

The chicken nugget was invented in the 1950s by Robert C. Baker, a food science professor at Cornell University, and published as unpatented academic work. Dr. Baker's innovations made it possible to form chicken nuggets in any shape. The McDonald's version of Chicken Nuggets are known as Chicken McNuggets. Their recipe was created on commission from McDonald's by Tyson Foods in 1979 and the product was sold beginning in 1980.

Chicken nuggets are generally regarded as a fatty, unhealthy food. Nutritionists agree that the dish is one of the prime reasons that obesity and health problems are such a big problem in countries like the United States, especially in children.

A study published in the American Journal of Medicine analyzed the composition of chicken nuggets from 2 different American fast food chains. The study found that less than half of the material was skeletal muscle, with fat occurring in equal or greater quantities. Other components included epithelial tissue, bone, nervous tissue, and connective tissue. The authors concluded that "Chicken nuggets are mostly fat, and their name is a misnomer."

The largest recorded chicken nugget weighed 51.1 pounds (23.2 kg) and was 3.25 feet (0.99 m) long and 2 feet (0.61 m) wide and was created by Empire Kosher. It was unveiled at Kosherfest in Secaucus, New Jersey on October 29, 2013.

In North America, a chicken sandwich is a sandwich which typically consists of a boneless, skinless breast of chicken served between slices of bread, on a bun, or on a roll. Variations of what North Americans consider a "Chicken Sandwich" include the chicken burger or chicken on a bun, hot chicken, and chicken salad sandwich. Countries outside of North America generally consider a chicken sandwich to only consist of flat bread, whereas a chicken burger is defined by the use of bread buns with chicken as part of its content.

In North America, the sandwich usually consists of a chicken filet or patty, toppings and bread. The chicken can be deep fried, grilled, roasted or boiled, served hot or cold, and white or dark meat chicken can be used. Shredded chicken in one form or another, such as chicken salad, can also be used in chicken sandwiches. Wrap versions of the sandwich can also be made, in which the ingredients are rolled up inside a flatbread, such as a tortilla.

Open-faced versions of the sandwich, which feature hot chicken served with gravy on top of bread, are also common variations.

Some establishments serving hamburgers also serve chicken sandwiches, to give customers an alternative to beef. Such a sandwich may also be called "chicken on a bun" or "chicken burger" in Australia or the UK, and is served on a hamburger bun with similar condiments and toppings as found on hamburgers. While most chicken sandwiches in this context usually use fried or grilled chicken breasts, a chicken burger may also be made of a grilled or fried patty of ground chicken.

Chick-fil-A claims that it invented the fried chicken sandwich in the 1940s. This claim is unsubstantiated, though the Chick-fil-A southern-style chicken sandwich (served with pickles on a steamed roll), introduced in 1964, was most likely the first chicken sandwich introduced by a fast food restaurant chain. Other notable vendors of chicken sandwiches include KFC and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. Today, most major fast food, fast casual and casual dining chains feature some sort of chicken sandwich, even at restaurants where chicken is not a specialty.

Chip fork


A chip fork is a small fork made from wood or plastic that is given away by fast food suppliers with portions of french fries, currywurst, and similar, and used when eating. Chip forks are specially designed to keep eaters fingers clean of grease, sauces, mayonnaise, and other, while at the same time being cheap enough to be thrown away after use. Thus they spare suppliers the cost and labour of collecting and cleaning traditional forks. This fits well with the image of fast food as kinds of products to be taken away and being consumed elsewhere.

The usual design of chip forks has either two or three prongs at one end. Their length is somewhere between 7½ and 9 cm, their width between 1 and 1½ cm at the widest place.

Today, these forks have completely replaced an earlier version of chip forks from the BeNeLux area which had to be cleaned and reused. Whether the throw-away version was first used in Berlin, Germany, or the Netherlands is disputed.

In Germany, the local name Pommesgabel, also "Pommespicker" (literally: "Chip/French fries fork/picking device") is a popular alternative denomination for the mano cornuta.

Coffee and doughnuts is a common food and drink pairing in the United States and Canada. The pairing is often consumed as a simple breakfast, and is often consumed in doughnut shops.Coffee is a brewed drink that is typically served hot. Doughnuts are sweet, deep fried desserts. The pairing may also be served and consumed as a refreshment.Coffee breaks are sometimes taken as a work break during the mid-morning or mid-afternoon "to consume coffee and doughnuts (or rolls)." In 1989, Harry Balzer, the chief industry analyst of the market research company NPD Group, stated that in the United States, 41–42% of all breakfasts included coffee and that 14.2% of all breakfasts included a doughnut.

Coffee and doughnuts are sometimes provided as a part of events and fundraisers for various organizations, charities, groups and companies.

Some companies use the phrase "coffee and doughnuts" in their business name, such as Bob's Coffee and Doughnuts in Los Angeles, California.Krispy Kreme has provided free coffee and doughnuts in commemoration of National Coffee Day, and other companies have offered discounts or special offers in commemoration of the day.Tim Hortons is a Canadian multinational fast casual restaurant chain known for its coffee and doughnuts.

In September 2015, Dunkin' Donuts, a doughnut and coffee shop chain, announced plans to move forward with a delivery program that includes delivery of coffee, doughnuts and other foods, to begin sometime in 2016. The delivery program is devised to use a mobile application for ordering products, and will be launched when the company updates its mobile application. The program was under consideration in June 2015. The New York Post reported that this was done in efforts to increase competition with Starbucks Coffee.

Coffee and doughnuts provide caffeine and glucose, along with other substances and nutrients. A study performed at the University of Barcelona in Spain and published in Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental reported that the combination of caffeine and glucose can contribute to increased attention and memory.

Conveyor belt sushi


Conveyor belt sushi (Japanese: 回転寿司, Hepburn: kaiten-zushi), literally "rotation sushi", also called sushi-go-round (くるくる寿司, kuru kuru sushi), is a form of sushi restaurant common in Japan. In Australia, it is also known as a sushi train.

Kaiten-zushi is a sushi restaurant where the plates with the sushi are placed on a rotating conveyor belt or moat that winds through the restaurant and moves past every table, counter and seat. Customers may place special orders, but most simply pick their selections from a steady stream of fresh sushi moving along the conveyor belt. The final bill is based on the number and type of plates of the consumed sushi. Some restaurants use a fancier presentation such as miniature wooden "sushi boats" traveling small canals or miniature locomotive cars.

The most remarkable feature of conveyor belt sushi is the stream of plates winding through the restaurant. The selection is usually not limited to sushi; it may also include drinks, fruits, desserts, soups, and other foods.

Some restaurants have RFID tags or other systems in place to remove sushi that has rotated for too long.

If customers cannot find their desired sushi, they can make special orders. Sometimes speaker phones are available for this purpose above the conveyor belt. If a small quantity of sushi is ordered, it is placed on the conveyor belt but marked so other customers know that this dish was ordered by someone. Usually, the plate with the sushi sits on a labeled cylindrical stand to indicate that this is a special order. For large orders the sushi may also be brought to the customer by the attendants. Some restaurants in Japan also have touch screen displays for ordering specific dishes which might be delivered on a separate conveyor belt or by waiters.

Condiments and tools are usually found near the seats, for example pickled ginger, chopsticks, soy sauce, and small dishes for the soy sauce. Wasabi may be either at the seat or on the conveyor belt. Self-served tea and ice water is usually complimentary, with cups stacked on a shelf above the conveyor belt and teabags or green tea powder in a storage container on the table. There is also a hot water faucet at the tables to make tea. On the shelves are usually wet paper towels and plastic boxes to store sushi for take-out customers.

A croquette is a small breadcrumbed fried food roll containing, usually as main ingredients, mashed potatoes or ground meat (veal, beef, chicken, or turkey), shellfish, fish, cheese, vegetables, and mixed with béchamel or , and soaked white bread, egg, onion, spices and herbs, wine, milk, beer, or any of the combination thereof, sometimes with a filling, e.g. sautéed onions, mushrooms, or boiled eggs (Scotch eggs). The croquette is usually shaped into a cylinder, disk, or oval shape, and then deep-fried. The croquette (from the French croquer, "to crunch") gained worldwide popularity, both as a delicacy and as a fast food.

Mashed potato-filled croquettes are often served as a side dish in winter holiday meals, such as Christmas. In fast food cuisine, varieties exist without potatoes, but with cheese, beef, or goulash, often in a filling based on béchamel sauce.

A potato-filled croquette called aloo tikki is very popular in northern India and is typically served with a stew. They are mostly eaten as snacks at home and are also popularly sold by road-side vendors. In West Bengal, it is called alu chop, as in Bangladesh. Sometimes it is called a "cutlet" and eaten plain or as a fast food variation that is served inside a hamburger bun (like a vegetarian burger). Meat croquettes called kababs are made with minced mutton. Lightly spiced beef croquettes are a popular snack and appetiser among the Christian communities in Goa and Kerala.

The kroket (Dutch) made of potato and minced chicken inside a crepe-like wrapper is one of the more popular snack items in Indonesia, introduced during the Dutch colonial rule. The kroket is made by wrapping a potato and chicken filling inside a crepe-like wrapper, breaded, and fried.

Curly fries/twirly fries are a kind of french fry characterized by their unique helical shape. They are generally made from whole potatoes that are cut using a specialized spiralizer. Curly fries are generally seasoned with spices which include garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, paprika, and salt. Curly fries are available frozen for preparation at home. They can also be found at a number of restaurants and fast food outlets. They are sometimes served with cups of dipping cheese although other condiments, such as ketchup, ranch dressing, sour cream and chili sauce, may be served with curly fries.
