CKE Restaurants

imageCKE Restaurants Holdings, Inc.

CKE Restaurants Holdings, Inc., is the parent company of the Carl's Jr., Hardee's, Green Burrito, and Red Burrito quick-service restaurant ("QSR") brands. The company's headquarters are located in Carpinteria, California. On March 4, 2016, CKE Restaurants Holdings, Inc. announced that they would be consolidating their corporate offices in St. Louis, Missouri and Carpinteria, California and moving them to the Nashville, Tennessee area at the Franklin Park office complex. CKE’s Anaheim, Calif.-based office will remain open.

As of March 2016, CKE has a total of 3,664 franchised or company-operated restaurants in 44 states and 38 foreign countries and U.S. territories. It is a privately-held company.

The company was incorporated in 1966 by Carl's Jr. founder Carl Karcher.

In 1996, CKE acquired Rally's and Taco Bueno. Rally's was later sold to Checkers in 1999. Checkers and Rally's now follow a similar concept as CKE has for its Carl's Jr. and Hardee's chains. Taco Bueno was sold in 2001 when private investment group Jacobson Partners purchased the chain for $72.5 million US dollars to help aid CKE Restaurants in a debt battle.

In 1997, CKE acquired Hardee's from Canadian-based company Imasco Limited.

In September 2000, Andrew Puzder was named CEO and he continues to serve in this role today.

In March 2002, CKE purchased Santa Barbara Restaurant Group, Inc. (SBRG), acquiring with it direct ownership of the Green Burrito brand.

On February 26, 2010, THL Partners agreed to acquire CKE Restaurants Inc. However, CKE Restaurants was, instead, acquired by Columbia Lake Acquisition Holdings, Inc., an affiliate of Apollo Management VII, L.P. in July 2010, after CKE accepted a $693.9 million takeover offer from Apollo Global Management, ending the earlier takeover agreement with THL Partners.

Big Hardee

The Big Hardee is a hamburger sandwich offered by Hardee's. The original Big Hardee was introduced in 1995 and was designed to compete against McDonald's Big Mac or Burger King's Whopper. It debuted in a commercial with the Big Mac sandwich. It had a jingle that goes, "More meat, more cheese, less money. La la la la la."

The Big Hardee was re-released in September, 2009. The sandwich features three 9:1 (9 patties = 1 pound) beef patties, two slices of American cheese, shredded lettuce and Big Twin Sauce on a 4-inch seeded bun. The sandwich averages 730 calories, 51g of fat and 1120 mg of sodium.

Additionally, Hardee's sister chain, Carl's Jr. also introduced its version of the Big Hardee, The Big Carl, though unlike Hardee's only has two patties and is priced at $3.49.

The Big Hardee was reintroduced in response to McDonald's inclusion of Angus beef into its own sandwich lineup. The Big Hardee costs approximately $2.29, 70 cents less than a Big Mac.

Big Twin Sauce

Big Twin Sauce is a condiment featured by the Hardee's and Carl's Jr. restaurant chain. The sauce is comparable in taste to Thousand Island dressing. The sauce is featured in Hardee's Big Hardee sandwich and Carl's Jr. Big Carl. Although the exact composition of the sauce is a trade-secret, its likely ingredients include mayonnaise, eggs, pickles, green onions, salt and pepper and chili sauce. It is comparable to McDonald's own special sauce, first released in 1975.

Americans have a longstanding history of being drawn to the flavor combination of Thousand Island dressing on a double cheeseburger. Standard cheeseburger condiments include ketchup, barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, relish, mustard, and also Thousand Island dressing.

Many fast food restaurants feature a similar style sauce. This includes Wendy's, Sonic Drive In, Burger King, and Arbys.

Green Burrito

Green Burrito is an American fast-food restaurant chain run by CKE Restaurants, located mostly in the Western and Southwestern United States and serving fast-food Tex-Mex.

Originally, Green Burrito was an independent restaurant in Hawaiian Gardens, California. Ruben Rodriguez purchased it in 1980, and turned it into a chain, whose parent company Santa Barbara Restaurant Group was acquired by CKE in 2001.

CKE's policy has been to add Green Burrito dual-branding to many of their Carl's Jr. hamburger restaurants, thereby adding a Mexican menu. As of 2008, there were 300 co-branded Green Burrito/Carl's Jr. restaurants.

CKE later introduced the identical Red Burrito for its Hardee's chain, which primarily serves the Midwestern and Southern United States.

Wilber Hardee

Wilber Hardee (August 15, 1918 – June 20, 2008) was the founder of the American fast-food restaurant chain Hardee's, located mostly in the Midwest and Southeast regions.

Wilber Hardee was born in Martin County, North Carolina, on August 15, 1918. His first name is commonly misspelled as Wilbur, but Wilber is the way he spelled it himself. Raised on his family's farm, he eventually left the family business to become a musician and later a grill cook. Hardee joined the United States Navy during World War II, but upon his uncle's death, he returned to the United States. After returning he met and married Kathryn Roebuck in 1945.

With his wife, he opened a series of restaurants and inns in North Carolina, including the Do Drop Inn and Port Terminal Inn and the Silo Restaurant. He studied the things that the public seems to respond to the most at existing quick-serve restaurants at the time and an idea formed that would evolve into the first Hardee's restaurant concept. On September 3, 1960, he opened the first Hardee's location in his hometown of Greenville.

Wilber Hardee died in his home town of Greenville, North Carolina, on June 20, 2008, and was cremated two days later. His cremains are inurned in Greenville at Pinewood Memorial Park in the Floral Garden 4 Section.

Carl Karcher

imageCarl Karcher

Carl Nicholas Karcher (January 16, 1917 – January 11, 2008) was an American businessman who founded the Carl's Jr. hamburger chain, now owned by parent company CKE Restaurants, Inc.

Born on a farm near Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Karcher was the son of Ohio natives Leo and Anna Maria (Kuntz) Karcher. Leo Karcher's grandparents immigrated from Belgium; Anna Maria Kuntz was of German ancestry. Carl N. Karcher moved to Anaheim, California, where his uncle ran a small business. He was hired by his uncle and worked for him for three years, and later dropped that job to work at a bakery as a delivery boy which increased his weekly salary by $6. He married Margaret Magdalen Heinz Karcher in 1939.

Karcher and his wife started their first business, a hot dog stand, on July 17, 1941 in Los Angeles when they borrowed $311 against their Plymouth automobile and added $15 from Margaret's purse. The stand initially sold hot dogs and Mexican tamales. On his 28th birthday, January 16, 1945, they opened their first restaurant, Carl's Drive-In Barbecue, in Anaheim.

Their restaurant quickly expanded, with the restaurants numbering 100 by 1974 and over 300 by 1981. Karcher was investigated and sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission for insider trading after allegedly telling family members to sell their stock in advance of a poor earnings report. Karcher settled the case in July 1989 for $664,000. Karcher served as chairman and CEO of the company until its own board of directors voted him out in 1993 after years of infighting over strategy.

Karcher objected to the sexualized nature of the Carl's Jr. ad campaigns of the 2000s, and was said to have been "heartbroken that a company he founded on Christian principles has taken such an amoral act."

Karcher died on January 11, 2008, from complications of Parkinson's Disease, at age 90 .

Karcher received numerous awards for his philanthropy, including, in 1979, the Horatio Alger Award "for his distinction in accomplishments through individual initiative, hard work and adherence to traditional ideals."
