King Brewery

King Brewery is a brewery in Nobleton, Ontario, Canada which has won a number of awards. It operates in a traditional German style, producing lagers. Owner and brewmaster Philip DiFonzo gained input from over 200 bars, pubs, taverns, and restaurants before launching in July 2002 with a single Czech-style Bohemian Pilsner. King Brewery's 20 hectolitre brewhouse with a steam-fired kettle continues to be one of very few authentic Decoction Brew houses in Canada. This popular method of brewing in Germany is rare in Canada as it takes longer and is a more expensive brewing process.

The King Brewery Pilsner has won a Gold Medal at the Canadian Brewing Awards, in the class "European Style Lager (Pilsner)", as well as the 2004 Toronto Star Beer of the Year.

The King Brewery Dark Lager has won a Bronze Medal in the class "Dark Lager".

Labatt Brewing Company

imageLabatt Brewing Companies, Ltd.

Labatt Brewing Company Ltd. (French: Brasseries Labatt du Canada Ltée) is a Belgian-owned Canadian beer company founded by John Kinder Labatt in 1847 in London, Ontario. In 1995, it was purchased by Belgian brewer Interbrew; it is now part of Anheuser-Busch InBev. Labatt is the largest brewer in Canada.

In the United States, Labatt brand beers are sold under license by Labatt USA, which since 2009 has been fully independent of the Canadian firm and a subsidiary of the privately held North American Breweries of Rochester, New York.

In 1901, Prohibition in Canada began through a provincial legislation in Prince Edward Island. In 1916, prohibition was instituted in Ontario as well, affecting all 64 breweries in the province. Although some provinces totally banned alcohol manufacture, some permitted production for export to the United States. Labatt survived by producing full strength beer for export south of the border and by introducing two "temperance ales" with less than two per cent alcohol for sale in Ontario. However, the Canadian beer industry suffered a second blow when Prohibition in the United States began in 1919. When Prohibition was repealed in Ontario in 1926, just 15 breweries remained and only Labatt retained its original management. This resulted in a strengthened industry position. In 1945 Labatt became a publicly traded company with the issuance of 900,000 shares.

John and Hugh Labatt, grandsons of founder John K. Labatt, launched Labatt 50 in 1950 to commemorate 50 years of partnership. The first light ale introduced in Canada, Labatt 50 was Canada's best-selling beer until 1979.

Lakeport Brewing Company

imageLakeport Breweries

The Lakeport Brewing Company is a beer brewer formerly located on Burlington Street East and Wellington Street North in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It is the largest discount brewer in Canada, and uses the motto "Lakeport, Great beer, Fair prices." The company was incorporated on April 27, 2005. Lakeport produces nine proprietary beers, of which the most popular are Lakeport Honey Lager and Lakeport Pilsner. As of 2006, Lakeport has an eleven percent share of the Ontario beer market the only province in which Lakeport beer is sold. They also have other brand names, such as Brava, Wee Willy, and Steeler lager.

The parent company of Lakeport Brewing is Lakeport Brewing Income Fund, now wholly owned by the Labatt division of Anheuser–Busch InBev.

Lakeport was founded by William (Bill) Sharpe in 1992 as a premium beer brewery, in a historical brewery building on Hamilton’s port lands, owned by the Hamilton Port Authority. Bill Sharpe created and launched many new brands of premium beer, as well as negotiating contracts to brew beers for other brands such as President's Choice. Lakeport's retail outlet adjacent to the brewery was the first store in Ontario to sell beer on Sundays.

Due to anti-competitive measures by Brewers Retail, owned by the two largest brewers in Canada, Lakeport was in bankruptcy protection in 1999 when AlphaCorp Holdings Ltd bought the brewery and hired Teresa Cascioli to manage the brewery. Lakeport took on contract manufacturing work for other beverage brands and reworked its operations to make the brewery profitable. Cascioli later bought out the other investors to gain complete ownership of the company which she retained until the initial public offering, at which point her ownership fell to twenty percent.

In 2002 Lakeport held one percent of the market share in Ontario when it pioneered a retail strategy of selling twenty four beers for twenty four dollars, the lowest legal price in Ontario. Lakeport used its low prices as the basis for its marketing to much success. The Lakeport Honey Lager brand in particular became popular. Teresa Cascioli feels the success is due to Lakeport's willingness to take ownership of their discount beers. She stated, "We are the only one at $24 plus deposit that actually puts our company name on it." This was a departure from the norm, especially for a brand such as honey lager. Typically specialty beer brands, such as honey lager, released under a company's name, were sold at premium prices. The marketing of Lakeport Light, Pilsener, and Honey Lager was combined to keep costs down.

McAuslan is still located on St-Ambroise street in the St-Henri borough and currently produces approximately 70,000 HL of beer annually.

Mill Street Brewery

imageMill Street Brewery

Mill Street Brewery is a brewery in Toronto, Canada that is a part of the global Anheuser–Busch InBev empire. During its first decade of operation, as an independent brewer, Mill St. won several awards including Golden Tap Awards for Best Toronto Microbrewery ('04-'08) and Best Toronto Beer (for Tankhouse Ale: '04-'07), and was named "Canadian Brewery of the Year" at the Canadian Brewing Awards in 2007, 2008, and 2009. It lost its status as an independent craft brewery in 2015 when it was purchased by industrial brewer Labatt Brewing Company, which in turn is owned by the global brewing giant Anheuser–Busch InBev.

The brewery was founded in December 2002 in Toronto by Steve Abrams, Jeff Cooper and Michael Duggan. The brewery was named after its original location at 55 Mill Street in the historic Distillery District, the former industrial complex occupied by spirits maker Gooderham and Worts. In early 2006, all large-scale brewing was moved to a bigger facility in Scarborough, Ontario, and the Distillery District location reopened in October, 2006 as a brewpub. The brewpub features 14 Mill Street beers on draught, including seasonal and other special/one-off releases. In 2007, co-founder Michael Duggan left, believing that new investors were more interested in profit than in quality.

In 2011, the company leased a historic grist mill building adjacent to the Chaudière Falls in Ottawa and converted it into a brewpub. The building is owned by the National Capital Commission and most recently housed The Mill (Old Mill Restaurant), a restaurant that closed in 2007 and a 140-year-old former grist mill. Also in 2011, Mill Street also became the first craft brewer to open a bar/restaurant in a major Canadian airport. The Mill Street Airport Pub is located in Terminal 1 (domestic) near gate 20 of Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Molson Coors Brewing Company

imageMolson Coors Brewing Company

The Molson Coors Brewing Company is a multinational brewing company, formed in 2005 by the merger of Molson of Canada, and Coors of the United States. It is the world's seventh largest brewer by volume.

While the company is incorporated in the United States, it is traded on stock exchanges in both the United States and Canada, and control is equally shared between the Molson and Coors families. The company is headquartered at the 54-story 1,372,179-square-foot (127,479.6 m2) Centurylink Tower in Denver, Colorado, with 67,000-square-foot (6,200 m2) office areas, which are located on the 45th, 46th and part of the 47th floors in the tower.

Molson Coors expanded significantly after the merger of Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller in October 2016. This was achieved because during the plans for the merger, SABMiller had agreed to divest itself of the Miller brands by selling its stake in MillerCoors to Molson Coors.

On 9 October 2007, SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing Company announced a joint venture to be known as MillerCoors for their U.S. operations that will market all of their products.MillerCoors is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.

On 2 February 2011, the company purchased Sharp's Brewery of Cornwall in England for around £20 million.

On 26 May 2011, seventh-generation family member Andrew Molson succeeded Pete Coors as acting Chairman of the company.

In early 2012 the company expanded into the Central and Eastern Europe markets by acquiring the region's market-leading brewery StarBev from CVC Capital Partners.

In September 2014, it was revealed in the media that the firm was in talks to acquire Heineken’s operations in the Czech Republic.

During the merger discussions between Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller in 2015, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) had agreed to proposed deal only on the basis that SABMiller "spins off all its MillerCoors holdings in the U.S. — which include both Miller- and Coors-held brands — along with its Miller brands outside the U.S." The entire ownership situation was complicated: "In the United States, Coors is majority owned by MillerCoors (a subsidiary of SABMiller) and minority owned by Molson Coors, though internationally it’s entirely owned by Molson Coors, and Miller is owned by SABMiller."

Moosehead Breweries

imageMoosehead Breweries Limited

Moosehead Breweries Limited is Canada's oldest independent brewery, located in Saint John, New Brunswick. The brewery was founded in 1867 and is still privately owned and operated by the Oland family. Now in the sixth generation of family ownership, this is a privately held company. The Moosehead line of beer is extensive, and includes American beers brewed under license for four major U.S. companies. Moosehead beer is sold throughout Canada, in many locations in the United States and in 15 countries around the world.

In 2003, Moosehead Lager won a Gold award at the World Beer Cup, and earned another at Monde Selection in 2005. However, Monde Selection awards are non-competitive and only products that pay to enter are judged. In 2015, Moosehead won a single Gold award in the Canadian Brewing Awards where most of the winners are craft beers. In 2016, two of the company's products won a Gold and a Silver award, respectively.

This company had an estimated 3.8 percent share of the Canadian domestic market in 2016. Since all major competitors are owned by multi-nationals, Moosehead is now the largest fully Canadian-owned brewer. This is a private company that is not required to release financial information, but the IBISWorld Industry Report on Breweries in Canada stated the company was expected to generate $263.8 million in revenue over 2016.

In 1865, Susannah Oland moved from England to Nova Scotia, Canada. With her husband John and nine other employees, Susannah opened The Army and Navy Brewery in 1867, a name that came after their most appreciative customers. After John Oland's untimely death in 1870, the brewery changed its name to S. Oland, Sons and Co. Over the next eight years, the brewery faced two fires, but recovered after each. In 1886, Susannah Oland died, and the company went to her two sons, Conrad and George. With the approach of the 20th century, the company changed its name to the Maritime Brewing & Malting Co. It faced hard times once again when the Halifax Explosion of 1917 killed Conrad Oland and destroyed the brewery. A year later, George Oland and his sons moved to Halifax and bought another brewery. In 1928, George bought a second, larger brewery in the city of Saint John, New Brunswick, site of the present day facility.
