Marabou (chocolate)

Marabou is a Swedish chocolate brand, first launched in 1916.

The brand was founded by the Norwegian chocolatier Queeni bffs (1868–1946) who already had launched the same chocolate recipe in Norway under the name Freia with great success – in the beginning of the 20th century Freia owned over 50% of the Norwegian market. During the first world war the continental European markets were closed, so the company decided to expand to Sweden. In 1916 the brand Marabou was created – as the name Freja was already taken in Sweden, the company decided to name their Swedish branch after the stork in the logo. However, the actual production didn't start until 1919 due to shortages in cocoa supply caused by World War I.

Throne Holst's second son, Henning, took over Sweden's first chocolate factory in Sundbyberg, just north of in 1918. He was in charge of creating the brands which are still present today; Japp, Daim, Twist, Fortuna and Non Stop. The first Marabou chocolate to be established was milk chocolate (Mjölkchoklad), which was produced using the same recipe as Freia. From the mid-1950s on, Marabou chocolate was caramelized, which significantly changed its taste. Over time the Sundbyberg factory was not sufficient for the growing demand, so in the 1970s production moved, after 60 years in one location, to newly-built premises in Upplands Väsby, where it remains today.

At the end of the 1960s, the symbol of Marabou was changed from a stork to the marabou rounded “M”. It was designed by Sigvard Bernadotte. This also marked the beginning of the first commercials starring Yvonne Lombard who created the slogan "Mmm... Marabou!". Marabou chocolate is widely available in Sweden in assorted varieties.

Freia and Marabou later merged, and, in 1993, were purchased by Kraft Foods for 3 billion Norwegian kroner. Marabou chocolate is available in a number of European countries and was until September 2011 sold by IKEA in Canada, Israel, Poland and the US. Marabou chocolate is still sold by IKEA in Australia, Spain and the UK.

Marich Confectionery

Marich Confectionery was founded in 1983 by Marinus van Dam, creator of the Jelly Belly. At age 15, with his father in a concentration camp for Dutch resistance during World War II, Marinus started to work as a janitor in a candy factory in Rotterdam to help support his family. Management took note of his interest, abilities and skills, and sent him to a Dutch candy technology school where he proceeded to graduate with several degrees. He immigrated to the United States in 1957. Once in the United States, he spent most of his early career working for Herman Goelitz, Inc., where he invented a number of signature candies, including the Jelly Belly.

After working for others for nearly a lifetime, Marinus founded Marich Confectionery in 1983 in Watsonville, California. While he was the clear guiding force of Marich, there were a few co-founders that have continued to the present, including Ron, Von, and Lon Packard and one co-founder that left in 2004 - Leon H. Przybyla Jr. Marinus also employed his two sons, Brad van Dam, who was then in college, and Troy van Dam, still in high school, who began their careers at Marich.

In Watsonville, Marinus invented a series of delicious chocolates consisting of chocolate covered dried fruits. The first was the chocolate covered dried cherry with pastel cherry coating. In late 1992, Marich introduced the chocolate covered dried blueberry to the confectionery market. These were the start that led to many more chocolate covered fruit products that have found widespread appeal in the marketplace. In 1995 Marich was recognized for its leadership in shaping the gourmet chocolate market. In 2001, Marich received the International Fancy Food Show award for the creation of the chocolate covered dried cherry, then considered a classic.

While in Watsonville, Marich had expanded and was spread between three buildings. So in 1997, it acquired its own land in Hollister, California, built a consolidated 55,000 sq ft (5,100 m2) manufacturing facility, and moved. Soon before the move, Marinus died. Before his passing, his son Brad was installed as the new CEO of Marich, and his son Troy was installed as the new COO. In 2006, Marich added 20,000 sq ft (1,900 m2) to its manufacturing plant to meet demands for its products. Brad van Dam was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of NASFT, which sponsors the biannual International Fancy Food & Confection Shows.

Mast Brothers

imageMast Brothers

Mast Brothers is an American artisanal chocolate company headquartered in Brooklyn, New York. The company was founded in 2007 by brothers Rick and Michael Mast, who are from Primghar, Iowa and who have been described as having "magnificent Civil War-era beards". Mast Brothers, according to Vanity Fair, are "widely credited for introducing artisanal chocolate to mainstream American culture" and to have been instrumental in popularizing the bean-to-bar movement in America, but has faced criticism for their lack of involvement in the artisanal chocolate business community, as well as allegations they used third-party chocolate in their early products.

The building is located in Williamsburg. Encompassing 3,000 square feet (280 square meters), the Minimalist-style chocolate shop is located inside a building that once served as a spice factory and today houses various small companies. A critic's pick by New York Magazine.

Mast Brothers opened London's first commercial bean-to-bar chocolate factory on Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, an East London neighborhood, welcoming visitors into a multi-use space where they can see the chocolate production process, buy chocolate bars and other treats, and even drink their chocolate.

Mast Brothers opened the first bean-to-bar chocolate factory in Los Angeles, California in May of 2016. The chocolate factory is located in a 6,000 square foot warehouse in the Arts District.

Mast Brothers currently offers 12 varieties of chocolate bars with their 2016 Collection which launched during the London Design Festival. The 2016 Collection consists of six dark chocolate bars (Sea Salt, Mint, Olive Oil, Almond Butter, and their signature Dark) and six milk chocolate bars (Goat Milk, Sheep Milk, Vanilla, Maple, Coffee, and their signature Milk). The bars are available in three sizes. A 70-gram bar of Mast Brothers chocolate typically sells for $9 from the Mast Brothers' Brooklyn flagship location and for $10 at hundreds of secondary retailers. The company has gained attention both for the quality of its packaging design ("not unlike unwrapping a gift", as Vanity Fair described it) as well as for its chocolate, including praise from noted French Laundry chef Thomas Keller.
