Ho Hos

Ho Hos are small, cylindrical, frosted, cream-filled chocolate snack cakes with a pinwheel design based on the Swiss roll. Made by Hostess Brands, they are similar to Yodels by Drake's and Swiss Rolls by Little Debbie.

Sold two or three per package, they contain about 120 calories per roll.

The product is also produced in Canada by Vachon Inc., which holds its Canadian rights.

A San Francisco bakery created the first Ho Hos in 1920.

"Happy Ho Ho" was created in the 1970s and was the original cartoon mascot for Ho Hos. The mascot appeared on the boxes, ads, and television commercials for many years before he was discontinued. The character wore an outfit similar to that of Robin Hood, including a feathered cap.

A nut-covered version named Nutty Ho Hos was introduced in 1999, along with a promotional search for "the country's nuttiest celebrity laugh" which was awarded to comedian Eddie Murphy based on consumer votes.

Caramel Ho Hos were introduced in February 2004. The modified snack includes a layer of caramel along with the creme filling. Caramel-chocolate Ho Hos were another new flavor that were introduced in May 2003.

Hostess (snack cakes)

imageHostess

Hostess Cake, simply known as Hostess, is a brand under which snack cakes are sold by Hostess Brands. The brand originated in 1919 upon the first sale of the Hostess CupCake. Hostess is better-known as the brand under which Twinkies are sold, after making its first appearance in 1930. The brand was owned by Continental Baking Company until 1995. At that point, Continental Baking was acquired by Interstate Bakeries Corporation. IBC became Hostess Brands in 2009 and began liquidating its assets in 2012 following a strike by the BCTGM union. The cake business of Hostess Brands was then sold to a "new" Hostess Brands owned by private equity firms Apollo Global Management and C. Dean Metropoulos and Company.

Hostess-branded products officially returned on July 15, 2013.

Their "fruit pies" became known for being in many comic book advertisements, in which a villain would be easily defeated "through the power of Hostess fruit pies". This was parodied in the Dexter's Laboratory cartoon series, with the Captain America parody Major Glory (from the Justice Friends sketch) using "Justice Fruit Pies" to thwart his enemy.

The brand's most recognized mascot is Twinkie the Kid.

Hostess CupCake

Hostess CupCake is a brand of snack cake formerly produced and distributed by Hostess Brands and currently owned by private equity firms Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co. Its most common form is a chocolate cupcake with chocolate icing and vanilla creme filling, with seven distinctive white squiggles across the top. However, other flavors have been available at times. It has been claimed to be the first commercially produced cupcake and has become an iconic American brand.

The Hostess CupCake was first sold on May 11, 1919, by Jeff Cup and used his name for the cup cake. According to author Andrew F. Smith, it was the first commercially produced cupcake, originally produced by the Taggart Bakery as the Chocolate Cup Cake. Hostess has also claimed that it was "the first snack cake ever introduced to the market." In 2004, rival Tastykake disputed this claim, claiming that Tastykake introduced the first snack cake.

Originally, two cupcakes were sold for five cents. Different flavors were offered during the early years, including cupcakes topped with vanilla or malted milk flavored icing. During the 1940s, an orange flavored cupcake was developed, with orange cake and icing. But until 1950, the Hostess CupCake did not have any filling or the white squiggly line across the top.

In 1947, D.R. "Doc" Rice, who started his career at Hostess in 1938 with a job that entailed dumping baked cakes on a table, was given the task of developing the Hostess CupCake further. These developments culminated in an updated cupcake in 1950. A white line consisting of squiggles was added to the top in order to distinguish the Hostess CupCake from other brands. The vanilla creme filling was also added. Rice got the idea for using a creme filling when a new machine for injecting filling into Hostess Twinkies became available. Improvements were also made to the cake mix and the chocolate icing in 1950. According to Rice, the updated cupcakes were first produced and test marketed in Detroit.

Hostess Potato Chips

Hostess Potato Chips was the leading potato chip brand in Canada for many years. They fended off any attempt to displace them from their commanding position, and retained their #1 position into the 1980s, even in the face of increased competition from US-based companies entering the Canadian market. They eventually suffered serious brand erosion in the early 1990s with the introduction of various "upscale" brands such as Kettle Chips and Miss Vickie's. The brand was replaced by Lay's in 1996 as part of its major re-branding exercise. As of 2015, the Hostess brand is used only on a few products.

Hostess was formed in 1935 when Edward Snyder began cooking chips on his mother's kitchen stove in Breslau, outside Kitchener, Ontario. Potato chips remained a fairly small part of the snack food market until the 1950s, when snack foods in general became more widely available. In 1955, Snyder sold his company to E.W. Vanstone, who expanded the company greatly before selling his interest to General Foods in 1959.

Hostess grew to become the #1 brand through this period and into the 1980s. Their powerful distribution channels made competing on price difficult, and shelf space for competing products was difficult to find, notably in smaller stores such as gas stations. The brand also gained a strong reputation for quality at the expense of other brands. Their packaging was instantly recognisable, featuring simple graphics and colour schemes. For much of the brand's history, only three flavours were sold; Regular in a blue package, Salt and Vinegar in yellow, and BBQ in deep red. The power of the brand was such that competitors generally used the same colours on their packaging as well, creating a standard of sorts.

In the mid-1970s, Hostess decided to expand its lineup and introduced three new flavours, Orange, Cherry and Grape. The attempt was a dismal failure, and the products disappeared from stores only a few months later. The products were so poorly received they remain a topic of derision to this day. Newer introductions followed, starting with the popular Sour Cream and Onion shortly after the fruit flavours disappeared. This was a huge success, and was followed by a series of other now-common flavours such as Dill Pickle and Ketchup. Another success was Hickory Sticks, a hickory-smoke-flavoured chip which broke the corporate branding by using a wood-grain patterning on their smaller bags.

Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods

imageHumpty Dumpty Snack Foods

Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods is an American food company, operating as a subsidiary of Old Dutch Foods, that packages and sells snack foods. The company is named after the nursery rhyme character and features the character as the company logo.

Humpty Dumpty Potato Chip Company, Inc. was founded in 1947 in Scarborough, Maine, USA by George Robinson and Norman Cole, producing ketchup-flavoured and sour-cream-and-clam-flavoured chips, among others.

The company was acquired by Borden, Inc. in February 1989.

In January 2000, it was then sold to the Canadian firm Small Fry, formally adopting the name Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods Inc.

In 2006, the company was acquired in a takeover bid by Old Dutch Foods. After the acquisition, Humpty Dumpty potato chip products were rebranded as Old Dutch potato chips. Old Dutch Foods kept the Humpty Dumpty label though, and still sells all their flavours of chips in the USA. In Canada only the snack line, and not the potato chip line, appears under the Humpty Dumpty label.

Humpty Dumpty originally sold a variety of potato chip flavours. For the original brand of chips, they included Regular, BBQ, Ketchup, Dill Pickle, Salt and Vinegar, Roast Chicken, Sour Cream and Onion, Smokin' Bacon, and a St-Hubert rotisserie chicken flavour.

For their ridged chip line, called Ripples, there were five varieties: Regular, Buffalo Wing, BBQ & Cheddar, Au Gratin, and All-Dressed. And finally, for their line of kettle-cooked chips, flavours featured were Regular, Jalapeño, Salt and Vinegar, BBQ, and Cheddar.

The current Humpty Dumpty snack line of products include Bacon & Hickory Potato Sticks, BBQ Corn Chips, BBQ Ringolos, Ketchup Ringolos, Chedacorn, Cheese Sticks, Cruncheez (in both Regular and Nacho Cheese), Party Mix (Original, Cheesy, and All Dressed), and Sour Cream & Onion Rings.

The current Humpty Dumpty Potato chip line of products include (only in the USA) Regular, BBQ, Ketchup, Dill Pickle, Salt and Vinegar, "Buffalo Wings & Blue Cheese" and for a limited time was selling Chedder & Sour Cream during the winter months of 2011. The current Humpty Dumpty Potato ridged chip line of products include (only in the USA) Regular, and All-Dressed.

The company announced it will close its Quebec-based Montreal Humpty Dumpty plant (in operation since 1964), on September 27, 2013. Lachine is closed. Four other Canadian plants, in other provinces, are unaffected.
