Oreo

Oreo (/ˈɔːrioʊ/) is a sandwich cookie consisting of two chocolate wafers with a sweet creme filling in between, and (as of 1974) are marketed as "Chocolate Sandwich Cookies" on the package in which they are held. The version currently sold in the United States is made by the Nabisco division of Mondelēz International. Oreo has become the best-selling cookie in the United States since its introduction in 1912.

The origin of the name Oreo is unknown, but there are many theories, including derivations from the French word 'Or', meaning gold (as early packaging was gold), or the Greek word 'Oreo', meaning beautiful, nice or well done. Others believe that the cookie was named Oreo because it was short and easy to pronounce.

The "Oreo Biscuit" was first developed and produced by the National Biscuit Company (today known as Nabisco) in 1912 at its Chelsea, Manhattan factory in the current-day Chelsea Market complex, located on Ninth Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets. Today, this same block of Ninth Avenue is known as "Oreo Way." The name Oreo was first trademarked on March 14, 1912. It was launched as an imitation of the Hydrox cookie manufactured by Sunshine company, introduced in 1908.

The original design of the cookie featured a wreath around the edge of the cookie and the name "OREO" in the center. In the United States, they were sold for 25 cents a pound (453 g) in novelty cans with clear glass tops. The first Oreo was sold on March 6, 1912, to a grocer in Hoboken, New Jersey.

The Oreo Biscuit was renamed in 1921, to "Oreo Sandwich." A new design for the cookie was introduced in 1924. A lemon-filled variety was available briefly during the 1920s, but was discontinued. In 1948, the Oreo Sandwich was renamed the "Oreo Creme' Sandwich"; it was changed in 1974 to the Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie. The modern-day Oreo design was developed in 1952 by William A. Turnier, to include the Nabisco logo.

Android Oreo

imageAndroid Oreo

Android "Oreo" (codenamed Android O during development) is the eighth major version of the Android mobile operating system. It was first released as an alpha quality developer preview on March 21, 2017 and finally released to the public on August 21, 2017.

Google unveiled a statue of the dessert-themed update at 14th Street Park in Manhattan, close to the original Nabisco factory that created the first Oreo.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 is the first device available with Oreo pre-installed.

Android Oreo was internally codenamed "Oatmeal Cookie." On March 21, 2017, Google released the first developer preview of Android "O", available for the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Pixel C, and both Pixel smartphones.

The second, considered beta quality, was released May 17, 2017.

The third developer preview was released on June 8, 2017 and offered a finalized version of the API. DP3 finalized the release's API to API level 26, changed the camera UI, reverted the Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity levels in the status bar back to Wi-Fi left, added themed notifications, added a battery animation in Settings: Battery, a new icon and darker background for the Clock app, and a teardrop icon shape for apps.

On July 24, 2017, a fourth developer preview was released which included the final system behaviors and the latest bug fixes and optimizations.

On August 18, 2017, Google launched an eclipse-themed teaser website, stating the release date and name unveiling of Android O as August 21, coinciding with the solar eclipse in the US. The name ultimately turned out to be "Oreo", as a partnership between Google and Nabisco, the producers of the world-famous cookie. Factory images were made available for compatible Nexus and Pixel devices later that day.

Oreo boycott

Oreo Boycott (also known as the Nabisco Boycott and Mondelez Boycott) is a boycott of the Oreo cookie and other Nabisco-manufactured products, including Chips Ahoy! and Cheese Nips. The boycott was prompted by the Mondelez company's decision to close its American factories and move production to Mexico.

In 2015, Mondelez International, the parent company of Nabisco, announced that it was laying off workers at factories in Chicago and Philadelphia. Production was moved to Salinas, Mexico. Mondelez decided not to make $120 million in upgrades to their Chicago facility and announced that half of the 1200 workers at the factory would be laid off.

In 2014, Mondelez generated more than $34 billion in revenue and CEO Irene Rosenfeld received $21 million a year in compensation. The pressure to cut American jobs was linked to the Bill Ackman, a hedge-fund billionaire who purchased a 7.5 percent stake in Mondelez, and is believed to have pushed for cost cutting.

Before announcing the closure and transfer to Mexico, Mondelez negotiated with unions and the local and federal government. Mondelez asked the worker's unions to take pay cuts to make up the $46 million difference between production in the US and Mexico. According to Mondelez, the three unions representing the workers made demands that could not be satisfied.

The Chicago factory, opened in the 1950s, was previously the largest bakery in the United States and employed over 4000 workers at its peak. The Chicago factory was considered critical to Mondelez's success because of the unique workforce and strategic midwest location. Earlier in 2015, Mondelez closed a factory in Philadelphia. which was 60 years old and led to the layoff of 350 employees.

The announcement of the boycott was made by elected officials in Philadelphia and union activists in Chicago. In a July 9 speech, Congressman Brendan Boyle announced the boycott with a poster of an Oreo cookie with a red circle and line through it, accompanied by the message, “Say no to Oreo,” After highlighting the American layoffs, Boyle also congratulated CEO Rosenfeld on her pay increase.

In Chicago, veteran activist Marilyn Katz drew attention to the boycott by writing that she was going to stop "dunking". Fellow activists announced that they would buy similar cookies from Trader Joe's or Hydrox rather than Oreo. Others, while supporting the boycott, highlighted the importance of international solidarity.

Deep fried Oreo

imageDeep Fried Oreo

A Deep Fried Oreo is a dessert or snack consisting of an Oreo which is dipped in batter and deep-fried. It can be served with different toppings or simply with no toppings. Deep Fried Oreos are generally made using the Oreo cookies by the Nabisco division of Mondelēz International, but also can be made of other chocolate sandwich cookies.

Deep Fried Oreos were first introduced by Charlie Boghosian, a 46-year-old Armenian settled in San Diego, in 2002 at Los Angeles County Fair. Charlie Boghosian is also known as “Chicken Charlie” or “The Man Who Fries Everything.” Charlie is a specialist in deep fried food: "There are many other fried foods at the fair, but I specialize in it. I make it my life," --- said by Charlie Boghosian.

In 2002, Charlie invented the Deep Fried Oreo by dipping it in pancake batter, deep-frying it, drizzling it with chocolate syrup and serving it with powdered sugar. Since the debut of Deep Fried Oreo, it has now become the carnival mainstay and cult favorite.

Apart from the Deep Fried Oreo, he has also introduced new types of deep fried food every year in different state fairs, for instance, Krispy Kreme chicken sandwich, Zucchini Weenie, fried Coke, frog legs etc.

Deep Fried Oreos are made with buttermilk pancake mix, Oreo cookies, water, vegetable oil and sugar.

Before any procedures, the oreo cookies are frozen for 3 hours and the oil is preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. After that, the buttermilk pancake mix is stirred with the water in a mixing bowl. The oreo cookies are dipped in the mixture, making sure the oreo is fully covered with the batter. The coated oreo cookies are then dropped into hot oil until the cookies turn golden brown. The cookies are removed from the oil and placed on a sheet pan with paper towels for draining the excessive oil. In the meantime, the tops of the fried oreos are dusted with confectioners sugar.

List of Oreo varieties

The most popular cookie in the United States, based on sales, is the Oreo. For most of its history, owner Nabisco (originally National Biscuit Company) only made the basic version of this cookie. But in recent years, increasingly since 2010, it has expanded to a great many varieties, both domestically and globally.

In addition to their traditional design of two chocolate wafers separated by a cream filling, Oreo cookies have been produced in many different varieties since they were first introduced, and this list is only a guide to some of the more notable and recent types; not all are available in every country. Notable flavors in the US are:
