Ashland Brewing Company

The Ashland Brewing Company was a small regional brewery, located in the northern Wisconsin city of Ashland. It was founded in 1874 and had an annual capacity of over 12,500 barrels.

The name of the company's facility was the Ashland Union Brewery, and was located on 10th Avenue East, on a plot of land next to Bay City Creek. This was near the site of another beverage business, known as the Ashland Bottling Works.

The brewery measured 34 by 70 feet and was two stories high. Initially built of wood, the building was later veneered with bricks on the outside. Next to the brewery was a 24 by 50 foot ice house, due to the unavailability of modern refrigeration at the time.

The brewery was owned by brothers Adam and Conrad Goeltz, who emigrated to the USA from Germany in 1847. They first moved to Ashland in 1854, subsequently leaving but returning in 1863. The brewery was later owned by Frederick W. Miller, from 1901 to 1937.

Beer was made available in both glass bottles, as well as kegs. Shipment was available, and the company delivered to all points around Lake Superior, according to an article about the brewery that appeared in the August 8, 1874 edition of the Ashland Press.

Some of the products included their flagship brand Ashland Beer, as well as White Ribbon Beer, and New York State Porter and Ale. Advertisements for each of these appeared locally and regionally.

The company's logo was a six-pointed star, inside of a circle, with the letter A (for Ashland) inside of the star. The star was known as the Brewer's Star, which was intended to symbolize purity. The six points of the star represented the six aspects of brewing most critical to purity: the water, the hops, the grain, the malt, the yeast, and the brewer.

During Prohibition, the company produced non-alcoholic beverages, such as soft drinks. The brewery eventually closed in the late 1930s, sometime after prohibition ended in 1933.

Despite closing after prohibition, the company remains a part of Wisconsin's brewing history. While a few other historic beer brands from Northern Wisconsin survived and still exist, such as Rhinelander Beer, Ashland Beer unfortunately remains just a memory.

Bavarian Brewing Company was a brewery established in Covington, Kentucky, in 1866 by Julius Deglow, but became known as the Bavarian Brewery in the 1870s. The brewery was originally located on Pike Street and the business expanded to include the 12th street property by 1877. The company also operated as the John Meyer Brewery and the Meyer-Riedlin Brewery before becoming incorporated at Bavarian Brewery Co. in 1889 by William Riedlin. The company was family owned until it was acquired by International Breweries, Inc.(IBI) in 1959. However, it operated as the Bavarian Division of IBI and continued to produce its flagship beer, Bavarian's, until the facility closed in 1966. The property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 and rehabilitated shortly thereafter.

After the brewery was established as DeGlow & Co., new ownership interests within just a couple of years resulted in several change to its name beginning in 1868, including DeGlow, Best & Renner. However, in 1873, it was established as the Bavarian Brewery Co. Over the next several years the brewery operated under this name, but ownership interests varied. John Meyer obtained controlling interest and the brewery operated under his name for a short time, starting in 1879. Then in 1882, a German immigrant named William Riedlin, who established a saloon and beer hall called Tivoli Hall in the Over The Rhine area of Cincinnati, entered into partnership with John Meyer. It operated as the Meyer-Riedlin Brewery before Riedlin purchased controlling interest in the brewery from Meyer, incorporated the business under its former name and became president in 1889. A number of changes were made to the facility during Riedlin's tenure including the brewery's first bottling plant built in 1892. Key bottling innovations including the crown bottle cap and pasteurization increased the shelf life of beer, enabling it to be distributed to a much wider area. Besides Bavarian Beer, the company also offered Riedlin Select Beer. By 1914 the annual beer production was 216,000 barrels, increasing from only 7,341 barrels in 1870, and it became the largest brewery in the state.

Operations expanded from the original location on Pike street to include several structures on the property between Pike Street and 12th Street. The main structure, which essentially remains today, was a four story 175 by 125 foot edifice that opened in January, 1906, serving as both the stock and wash houses. An ice house that manufactured 200,000 pounds of ice daily, and that included a couple of ponds, was adjacent to the brewery. The total land area comprised six and one-half-acres. Ice was used in the lager fermentation process before refrigeration became available and it was also sold to the public.

Beverwyck Brewery

Beverwyck Brewing Company was formed in 1878 and was located at 30/52 North Ferry Street, in Albany, New York. The brewery produced beer from 1878 until prohibition in 1920. During prohibition Beverwyck had a license to produce non-alcoholic beverages. It was one of the three breweries in Albany to survive prohibition, the others being J.F. Hedrick and Dobler Brewing.

In 1933 Beverwyck re-opened with 6 products. Beverwyck India Ale and Porter was produced from 1933 through 1944, while Beverwyck Ale, Bock, Beer and Irish Cream Ale were produced from 1933 to 1950 when the brewery was acquired by the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company of Brooklyn, New York. F. & M. Schaefer closed the brewery in 1972.

In the mid-1940s the company added a streamlined bottling plant and stock house which nearly doubled the production capacity.

Bevewyck used the tag line “Beverwyck, Best Beer Brewed” and had as its logo a shield, with BBBB placed diagonally on the shield. The father of tenor Alfred Piccaver once worked as head brewer of the factory.

The case was eventually settled with Big Sky agreeing to not sell Moose Drool directly to certain areas in eastern United States.

Billy Beer

imageBilly Beer

Billy Beer was a beer first made in the United States in July 1977, by the Falls City Brewing Company. It was promoted by Billy Carter, whose older brother Jimmy was the incumbent President of the United States. In October 1978, Falls City announced that it was closing its doors after less than a year of Carter's promotion. The beer was produced by Cold Spring Brewing, West End Brewing, and Pearl Brewing Company.

Written on each can were these words of endorsement, which were followed by Billy Carter's signature:

Brewed expressly for and with the personal approval of one of AMERICA's all-time Great Beer Drinkers—Billy Carter.

I had this beer brewed up just for me. I think it's the best I ever tasted. And I've tasted a lot. I think you'll like it, too.

Despite Carter's promotion of Billy Beer, "in private he drank Pabst".

After Billy Beer ceased production in 1978, advertisements appeared in newspapers offering to sell Billy Beer cans for several hundred to several thousands of dollars each, attempting to profit from their perceived rarity. However, since the cans were actually produced in the millions, the real value of a can ranged from 50 cents to one dollar in 1981.

Billy Beer was also featured on an episode of the reality series Auction Kings, where an appraiser deemed a case of unopened Billy Beer to be worthless; however, at the featured auction, the case was sold for $100.

The hit television show The Simpsons featured Homer drinking a can of Billy Beer in the 1997 episode "Lisa the Skeptic"; after Bart tells him that the skeleton he is trying to hide is probably old enough already, he counters Bart's remark by introducing his Billy Beer stating that people said the same thing about the beer. After he drinks the beer, he says "We elected the wrong Carter". Also in the 1992 episode "The Otto Show", Homer excitedly finds a can of Billy Beer in the pocket of his old "concert jacket", and drinks it.

Black Warrior Brewing Company

Black Warrior Brewing Company is a craft brewery in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Founders Joe Fuller, Jason Spikes and Eric Hull were friends and home-brewing enthusiasts who also worked together before they decided to open the brewery. They named the company after the Black Warrior River that runs through Tuscaloosa County. Black Warrior was the second brewery to open in Tuscaloosa after Tuscaloosa's city council voted to change the city’s zoning ordinances in 2012 to allow breweries and brewpubs.

The previous tenant of the brewery's two-story commercial storefront in the Downtown Tuscaloosa Historic District was the Oak City Barber & Beauty Shop, historically Black-owned business.

Black Warrior Brewing has given back to the community in a variety of ways. Once a month they host a charity night, titled "Pints with a Purpose" which donates a percentage of sales back to a different local charity every month. For example, in March 2014, the brewery hosted Ales to Fight Hunger, a fundraiser for a charity that provides weekend food to hungry schoolchildren in Alabama. The company also sponsors Tuscaloosa GoKickBall.

Boundary Bay Brewing Company

imageBoundary Bay Brewing Company

The Boundary Bay Brewing Company, also known as the Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro is a brewery and brewpub in Bellingham, Washington, USA. It was founded in 1995 by Ed Bennett, and has won numerous awards in national and international beer competitions. It is named after Boundary Bay, a bay north of Bellingham that is partially Canadian and partially American territory. During prohibition, rum-runners and bootleggers crossed illegal alcohol into the States through this unique geological feature.

The New Brewer, a publication of the Brewers Association, announced in their 2008 annual industry review that the Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro was the nation's largest brewpub based on number of barrels sold (a brewpub being defined as a restaurant-brewery that sells 25% or more of its beer on site).

Breckenridge Brewery

imageBreckenridge Brewery

Breckenridge Brewery is an American brewing company based in Littleton, Colorado. Select beers can be found in 35 US states. The company was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016.

Breckenridge Brewery was founded in Breckenridge, Colorado, by Richard Squire in 1990. It was Colorado's third craft brewery. In 1991, Squire brought on Todd Usry, who took over as brewmaster in 1994. Usry became director of production and sales in 2008, and was ultimately named the company's president.

In 1992, the brewery expanded operations beyond Breckenridge, opening a manufacturing facility in Denver adjacent to what would become Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. In 1996, Breckenridge moved the brewing, kegging and bottling of its beer to a new facility south of downtown. The original Denver location, Breck on Blake, remains open, with brewing no longer taking place there. In 2010, Wynkoop announced a merger with Breckenridge to form the holding company Breckenridge-Wynkoop LLC. The company also owns the Wynkoop Brewing Company, Phantom Canyon Brewing, and several restaurants. In January 2013, Breckenridge Brewery announced that its facility, by then producing 64,000 barrels of beer per year, was at max capacity and would be moving to a new brewery complex. In June 2015, Breckenridge Brewery left Denver and moved into its new $36 million, 12-acre, 85,000-square-foot campus in Littleton, Colorado, which includes three buildings: a brewhouse and office building, a building for fermentation and packaging, and its 300-seat Farm House restaurant and beer garden.

Breckenridge Brewery ranked #50 on the Brewers Association's 2014 list of the largest US craft breweries, and #47 on the 2015 list. The Brewers Association ranked Breckenridge Brewery as Colorado's fifth-largest craft brewer by barrels produced in 2015. Early on, Breckenridge Brewery produced roughly 1,000 barrels of beer per year. By 2015, the company was producing over 70,000 barrels of beer, with its beers sold in 35 states in the US.
