Hype Energy

imageHype Energy

Hype Energy is a range of energy drinks distributed in over 45 countries across the world. First launched in 1994 by Hard Rock Cafe founders, the company has been headed since May 2000 by former Formula One racing driver, Bertrand Gachot. Hype Energy has been an official sponsor of Formula One auto racing team Force India since 2015.

Hype Energy was first developed in 1993 by Ashley Roy, Nigel Spiro, and Andrew Barshall and backed by Hard Rock Cafe founder, Barry Cox. Under Spiro and Managing Director David Harris Hype Energy became heavily involved in motorsport by first sponsoring the Arrows Formula One team and subsequently Benetton, Williams, a NASCAR outfit and several motorbike teams. Associated with the Formula One party lifestyle and with a strong presence in the paddock, Hype Energy committed to considerable amounts of sponsorship in an attempt to achieve global recognition and establish worldwide distribution. In 1997, having established a credible brand, Hype Corporation (the holding company) decided to pull back from the sport to focus on resolving manufacturing difficulties, which were restricting further growth.

In 1997, former Formula One racing driver and 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, Bertrand Gachot, signed a distribution agreement with Hype Energy in order to introduce the product to France. Gachot was one of a handful of distributors who remained committed to the brand and in 1998, he approached the Swiss licensor to buy the company holding the Hype Energy trademarks. In May 2000, after two years of negotiation, Gachot came to an agreement and restructured the company. Until 2000 Hype Energy had four products in its portfolio: Hype MFP with a strawberry and cranberry flavour, Hype Energy Morning Rush with a citrus flavour, Hype Passion Attack with passion fruit and Hype Night Boost with peach. In May 2000, the company launched a new version of Hype Energy into selected markets. The culmination of 18 months of development, Hype Energy now used fresh fruit juice, contained ten vitamins and had no artificial colours or preservatives, as it was pasteurized.

Josta

Josta was a soft drink brand that was produced by PepsiCo and the first energy drink ever introduced by a major US beverage company. Josta's flavor has been described as predominately fruity, with a hint of spice and a touch of the key ingredient guaraná. It was marketed as a "high-energy drink" with guaraná and caffeine.

Josta was introduced in 1995, but PepsiCo pulled the drink from its lineup due to a change in corporate strategy in 1999. Shortly before the beverage was discontinued, an "Association for Josta Saving" was started. A "Save Josta" campaign was also launched by fans of the drink; their website "www.savejosta.com" was defunct for several years but was reactivated in 2011.

Josta used the slogan "better do the good stuff now." In a commercial for Josta an old man speaks to a younger man. The older man tells the younger man about his life as a youth, and how he wished he had more fun.

Krating Daeng

imageKrating Daeng

Krating Daeng (Thai: กระทิงแดง, Thai pronunciation: [krā.tʰiŋ dɛ̄ːŋ], literally "red bull" or "red gaur") is a sweetened, non-carbonated energy drink developed by Chaleo Yoovidhya. The drink is sold in Southeast Asia, China, and 165 other countries. Chaleo took the name from the gaur (Thai: กระทิง krathing) a large wild bovine of Southeast Asia. The Krating Daeng logo underlies its branding, with two charging bulls representing power, red signifying perseverance, and the backdrop of the sun symbolising energy. Krating Daeng became the basis for the creation of the best selling energy drink in the world, Red Bull. When he died in 2012 at age 88, Chaleo was a multi-billionaire.

Krating Daeng was first devised in 1975. It contains water, cane sugar, caffeine, taurine, inositol and B-vitamins. It was introduced in Thailand in 1976 as a refreshment for rural Thai labourers. "At first it was not very popular...," says current CEO Saravoot Yoovidhya. "It was quite different from others in the market, and Chaleo focused first on upcountry markets rather than in the cities where other competitors concentrated."

The working class image was boosted by sponsorship of Thai boxing matches, where the logo of two red bulls charging each other was often on display.

Krating Daeng has lost its leadership position in its home market of Thailand to M-150 and is now third in the country's energy drinks market, down to possibly only 7 percent market share in 2014.

Lucozade

imageLucozade/Glucozade

Lucozade is an umbrella name for a series of energy drinks and sports drinks. Originating in 1927 as the culmination of Newcastle chemist William Owen's efforts to create a source of energy for those who were sick with common illnesses, "Glucozade" was renamed Lucozade in 1929. The product was acquired by Beecham's in 1938, and the Lucozade name has since moved to several other companies in successive mergers and acquisitions. On 9 September 2013, both Lucozade and Ribena were acquired from GlaxoSmithKline by the Japanese conglomerate Suntory for £1.35 billion.

Lucozade (alongside Ribena) is produced at the Royal Forest Factory in Coleford, Gloucestershire, in the Forest of Dean, England.

"Glucozade" was first manufactured in 1927 by William Owen, a chemist based at Barras Bridge, Newcastle. Owen experimented for several years to provide a source of energy for those who were sick with common illnesses, like the common cold or influenza. It became available throughout Britain for use in hospitals under the name Glucozade. This was changed to Lucozade in 1929, and Beecham's acquired the product in 1938. By the early 1950s, Lucozade was the source of half of the company's profits.

In 1953, a factory for the production of Lucozade products was opened in Brentford, England, which, until 2004, had an iconic sign seen on the side of the M4 motorway (now in Gunnersbury Park Museum). Local people were reportedly upset when the sign was removed. A new and identical sign replaced the old sign in 2010.
